Match Report: The Sheffield Star - Green 'Un: 1st May 1920:

LEEDS UNITED v GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY.

Mason made three brilliant runs on the right for the United and from the last of these, White sent in a powerful shot which Ingall made a clever, although unsuccessful attempt to save. Gainsborough opened out to attack the left, where Cooper and Colbeck made headway by means of short passing. Cooper in the end transferred to Valance, who sent wide. Two corners tp Leeds United were of no advantage and from a free-kick Hart narrowly missed scoring. Towards the interval Copley and Brewer made headway on the right. Brewer finished a speedy run by sending the ball outside. Early in the second half Leeds United came near scoring from a free-kick taken by Hart, and a moment later Mason made a speedy and clever run on the right wing before centring. The the ball fell immediately in front of the Gainsborough goal, where Wasey handled and the referee promptly awarded a penalty. This was taken by Rodgers, who easily beat Ingall. Three minutes later, Hunter made a sudden dash for the United goal and was only pulled up by Coope, when three yards from the goalkeeper, the ball being sent out of touch. From the throw-in, Ellson opened out the attack for Leeds, but when near the goal he stopped and Ashton returned the ball to midfield. Here play ensued for some minutes, neither side gaining the advantage owing to the clever tackling on the part of the respective half-backs.

In the second half goals came with a great avalanche as Foster netted twice and Ellson and Malia made up the final half-dozen Leeds goals that found the Gainsborough Trinity net.
